The first day’s final stop on our Gangneung & Donghae 3-day, 2-night trip, which took place from April 2nd to April 4th, 2022, was Haslla Art World, the most impressive place of this trip. It was filled with unique and diverse exhibitions and great photo zones utilizing common architectural materials, so we spent a lot of time taking pictures. The popularity was so great that my phone battery was almost depleted.
Haslla Art World: A Complex Art Space
Named after ‘Haseulla,’ the old name of the Silla Dynasty’s Gangneung, this place is a complex art space featuring a 33,000-pyeong sculpture park, a museum hotel with ocean views, and various art exhibitions. You can enjoy the beautiful East Sea from every space, and it’s a place full of romance.
Haslla Art World offers special experiences and happiness through continuous artistic work, performances, exhibitions, and festivals by domestic and international artists throughout the year. The indoor art gallery houses the Gangneung Museum of Modern Art, where you can see about 200 contemporary art pieces, and the ‘Pinocchio & Marionette Museum,’ displaying marionettes and Pinocchio works collected from Europe. Various exhibitions, including special exhibitions, invited exhibitions, and permanent exhibitions, are held, so it’s advisable to check the exhibition schedule before visiting.
Ticket Information
Discounts are available for website reservations, and the price for adults is 13,000 won. On the Klook site, you can purchase tickets for 11,600 won per person. You can enter by scanning the barcode of your reserved ticket at the gate.

Gangneung Museum of Modern Art
At the Gangneung Museum of Modern Art, you can see various contemporary art pieces. In particular, the piano covered in spiderwebs was an amusing piece that made me imagine if Spider-Man wanted to steal the piano.

The intense performance space made of packaging string showed that even common materials can be used to create wonderful works of art. The fancy picture postcards also had a unique charm.

Convex Mirror Photo Zone
The photo zone made of convex mirrors is a space where you can take fun pictures by scanning all directions. Art breathes in every space, including the ceiling, walls, and floor, capturing the visitors’ attention.

Chinese Painting Style Exhibition
Beautiful works in the Chinese painting style are exhibited, and the Red Man sculpture amidst the splendid harmony gives the impression of singing a song.

Tunnel and Pipe Forest
After passing through a long tunnel that gives a sense of transcending space and time with its changing colors, you arrive at the ‘Pipe Forest.’ This area has stairs leading up, serving as a path to the next exhibition space.

Pinocchio & Marionette Museum
This place, where all the Pinocchios in the world gather, also has interactive elements, such as moving finger joints when a button is pressed. The crocodile sculpture crawling on the wall is surprisingly made of staples, which is astonishing.

Various works are exhibited, including pine tree paintings, sculptures, and a Frankenstein sculpture.

Marionette Museum
Be careful to check the signs as the entrance is narrow. The Marionette Museum displays various marionette works. The Mona Lisa piece elicits laughter with the witty phrase, ‘Actually, I am a man.’ The artwork of a skull whose neck bobs up and down offers a chilling experience.

Photo Zones
Haslla Art World offers various themed photo zones. In particular, the photo zone utilizing silver pipes to express them like reeds swaying in the wind was personally the most impressive. In the cave-themed photo zone, you can take commemorative photos in front of a bird’s nest-shaped sculpture.

Rooftop View
From the rooftop, you can enjoy a beautiful landscape where the sea and mountains blend. The ‘Standing on the Sea’ photo zone has a blue floor that creates the illusion of standing on the sea. In the ‘Under the Blue Sky’ symmetry photo zone, you can create fun memories by taking photos alone or with others. The wide rooftop is made of thin pipes, giving a slightly shaky feeling.

The ‘Sea on the Mountain’ photo zone showcases how eco-friendly buildings harmonize with nature without damaging it.

Outdoor Sculpture Park
The landscaping and facilities at Haslla Art World are managed by sculptors Park Shin-jung and Choi Ok-young, in conjunction with their artworks. The museum hotel is designed with artworks by artist Choi Ok-young. Following the outdoor sculpture park path leads to Choi Ok-young’s creative park.

Dol Museum & Sodong Art Museum
The Dol Museum and Sodong Art Museum, with their unique names, present visitors with fun and absurdity through unexpected artworks. The quadruplet duck sculpture, with its cute feet, captures attention.

The sculpture at a dizzying height and the man appearing to be struck by lightning from Earth showcase dynamic artworks.

Sky Flying Bicycle
The ‘Sky Flying Bicycle’ is a clever artwork where the shadow of a white bicycle appears to be flying in the sky from a distance. The tree stumps that look like they are walking like spiders also add to the fun.

Choi Ok-young’s Creative Park
Choi Ok-young’s creative park is filled with unique and creative works. Be sure to look carefully as photo zones utilizing discarded trees and hidden artworks are easy to miss.

You can also discover ‘hidden art’ near the parking lot. The sculpture that looks like it’s wearing mesh pants and the artwork with plump lips behind a head of lush pine needles are fun like a hidden picture game.

From the giraffe’s long neck peeking out from above the workshop roof to the mammoth family sculpture encountered at the very end, Haslla Art World offers sights until the very end.

For those who love art and design, Haslla Art World was a gift of time. Various programs such as docent tours and children’s experiences are operated, so please refer to the website. Haslla Art World, the last destination on the first day of our Gangneung trip, is a highly recommended place that I would suggest many people visit.
