Overview
This post details a visit to John & Dawson’s Yeonnam main branch, a charming semi-basement cafe divided into two halls. Despite initial concerns about the cold weather and potential crowds after a snowfall, the author was fortunate to get a table immediately upon arrival. The cafe offers a unique ambiance with antique display cabinets and stylish decor. The highlight of the visit was the French toast, described as exceptionally delicious with a crispy, caramelized exterior and a moist, chiffon-like interior. The accompanying Rooibos tea was also noted as a perfect complement to the sweet dessert. The author strongly recommends the French toast, even comparing it to their favorite salt bread and declaring it the best French toast they’ve ever had. They also mention that a new branch has opened in Gwanghwamun.

A Culinary Escape to Hongdae: Discovering the Delights of John & Dawson
On a chilly Tuesday, seeking refuge from noise and icy roads, I ventured to Hongdae for a shopping and dining excursion. Despite the cold, the vibrant atmosphere of Hongdae offered a welcome escape. My initial plan was to visit Homihwa Bang for interior items, but a spontaneous decision led me to John & Dawson, a cafe I'd been curious about. To my surprise, there were two empty tables, allowing immediate entry without any wait – a stroke of luck!

The cafe opens at 12 PM.

John & Dawson: A First Look
The cafe is situated in a semi-basement space and is divided into two distinct halls. Upon leaving, I took a photo of the Tableling reservation system, which showed 11 teams waiting. It truly felt like I had a stroke of good fortune.

The interior is divided into two halls.

I first checked for available seating by walking through a narrow corridor.

The ㄱ-shaped bar table is compact.

A person in a white chef's uniform was serving guests. The inner room was fully occupied, so I took a seat in the hall near the entrance.
The Menu and Our Order
Since a warm decaf latte was unavailable, I ordered Rooibos tea. I also ordered the 'French Toast,' which I had been craving.

I ordered Rooibos tea as a warm decaf latte was unavailable, and the 'French Toast' I had been craving. Whipped cream was ordered separately.

I sat near the entrance, in front of the counter. A foreign tourist was seated at the ㄱ-shaped bar table. It truly felt like a globally popular cafe. The decor included sparkling, vine-like artificial flowers and antique display cabinets.

The white and black boxes resembled butter boxes.
About 10 minutes later, our ordered dessert and drinks arrived.

The plates were also quite antique.
Rooibos Tea: A Perfect Pairing
The Rooibos tea is caffeine-free and pairs well with sweet desserts. Its aroma is less intense than Earl Grey, and it leaves the palate feeling clean. It was excellent!

The Star of the Show: French Toast
The French Toast was thick and rectangular, dusted with powdered sugar and served with maple syrup. On one side, there was Maldon salt.

The staff advised using the Maldon salt, a crystalline substance, to add a sweet and salty contrast after eating more than half of the toast. I had tried Maldon salt with steak before, but this was my first time trying it with bread.

The toast was cut into 8 pieces. When pressed with a fork, the surface was crispy with a caramel coating, while the inside was moist and soaked in egg mixture, similar to chiffon cake. I personally prefer agave syrup over maple syrup due to its strong flavor, but the syrup here was not overpowering, which I appreciated.

I savored each piece, taking photos with the beautiful mini pendant lights.

The atmosphere was great, the staff were friendly, and the French Toast was incredibly delicious! It rivals my favorite Bbetong salt bread and is my number one, highly recommended French Toast. I've already told my husband and friends that we must visit this place together. A new branch has also opened in Gwanghwamun, so keep that in mind if you're in the area. It's cold outside, but I hope you have a warm day in your heart. Stay healthy!
