This journey was filled with diverse experiences, including the mystical landscapes of Jigokudani Hell Valley, relaxation at a traditional hot spring hotel, and culinary adventures at a local market.

The journey to Sapporo via Asiana Airlines from Incheon Airport started early in the morning. We missed the first airport bus and took a taxi, but we arrived at the airport safely, checked in our luggage, and went through departure procedures. It was early, so there wasn’t much to see at the duty-free shops, but we discovered unique spaces like the ‘Roll & Valorant Store’ and were briefly intrigued. Seeing the League of Legends champion figures and cute poro dolls, I briefly thought about wanting to buy them.

The in-flight meal on Asiana Airlines was surprisingly delicious. Despite the short flight, the bulgogi rice bowl, morning roll, and pumpkin salad provided were a satisfying meal. It was especially delicious when mixed with the squeeze-type gochujang. During the flight, I played Tetris to pass the time and set a new record. I was so satisfied that I felt a little disappointed when it wasn’t Asiana Airlines for our arrival.

Moving from New Chitose Airport to Noboribetsu

After arriving at New Chitose Airport, we headed to catch the Noboribetsu bound Donan Bus, which we had booked in advance. After completing the procedures, instead of going straight past the Doraemon statue, you need to turn right to find the Donan Bus stop. We went down the escalator, found Gate 86, and boarded the bus. There was a moment of panic when we thought we might miss the bus, which only runs once a day, as we sprinted with our luggage.

How to Book the Donan Bus

Booking the Donan Bus is easy through their website. You can select your desired region and time, and the website is well-translated, making it simple to book. The fare is 2,100 yen one-way for adults, and the journey takes approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes. The buses are equipped with amenities such as 4-row reclining seats, restrooms, charging outlets, and free Wi-Fi (on some buses).

www.donanbus.co.jp

First Day in Noboribetsu: Hotel and Jigokudani Hell Valley Exploration

After getting off at the Donan Bus Park Hotel stop, we headed to the ‘Oyado Kiyomizuya Hotel’ we had booked. The accommodation, a traditional tatami room style rather than a modern building, offered a quiet and cozy atmosphere, which I would highly recommend to travelers who dislike noisy places. Detailed reviews of the accommodation will be shared in a separate post later.

After checking into the hotel, we headed to Jigokudani Hell Valley, the symbol of Noboribetsu. Along the way, we felt a mystical atmosphere as we saw the hot spring steam rising. Jigokudani Hell Valley has a strong sulfur smell, which humorously reminded me of the smell of egg farts. There was a sign asking not to throw coins into the small puddles, but we could see coins lying around.

Due to the hot weather, we explored Jigokudani Hell Valley for a while and then returned to the bustling downtown area to browse souvenir shops. There were many zodiac wood crafts, bear farms, and lavender-related products, but unfortunately, we couldn’t visit the bear farm due to its operating hours. The Hokkaido milk was incredibly rich and delicious, and the ice cream was also a treat. Strangely, I didn’t get an upset stomach even after drinking a lot.

In the bustling area, we also saw a fascinating statue that changed faces. My sister ordered salmon rice bowl, and I ordered the special kaisendon, which is the most famous dish at this restaurant. The Sapporo Classic beer was cold and delicious, but the kaisendon was disappointing, contrary to expectations. The combination of plain rice with fresh seafood on top felt a bit awkward, and the strong spice flavor made it taste like lotion, similar to cilantro. This was the only meal on this trip that I was not satisfied with.

Hot Spring and Late-Night Snack at the Hotel

After returning to our accommodation, we enjoyed the hotel’s sulfur hot springs. Unfortunately, the ring’s color returned to normal towards the end of the trip.

After browsing the supermarket, we bought late-night snacks from Seven-Eleven.
