Pyeongdaeseong Sea Urchin Noodles: A Harmony of Fresh Seafood and Deep Broth

During our 2-night, 3-day trip to Jeju, we visited Pyeongdaeseong Sea Urchin Noodles, located near Pyeongdae Beach. This restaurant is known for its reliability, using only fresh seafood caught by a mother-daughter duo of haenyeo (female divers). I was particularly looking forward to it, as it reminded me of the sea urchin and seaweed soup my mother used to make. Seeing it deliciously featured on the TV show ‘Jeon Hyun-moo’s Plan 2’ made me decide it was a must-try for this Jeju trip.

Pyeongdaeseong Sea Urchin Noodles is open from 10 AM to 6 PM, with the last order at 5:30 PM. It is closed on Mondays, so please keep this in mind when visiting. The restaurant is situated right in front of Pyeongdae Beach, allowing you to enjoy your meal while admiring the beautiful ocean view. Parking is available at the beach parking lot and is free of charge.

The fact that only seafood harvested by the Pyeongdae haenyeo themselves is used increases its credibility. However, please note that the restaurant may not be open on days when the haenyeo go out to sea for diving. It would be advisable to call ahead to confirm operating hours before your visit.

Sea Urchin Noodles That Taste of Freshness

As soon as we entered the restaurant, we asked if we could order the sea urchin noodles. We were worried that the sea urchins might be sold out. Fortunately, we were able to place an order and took a seat at a table. The interior was cozy with not many tables, so I couldn’t take proper photos inside. My husband, who accompanied me, had his face prominently in the shot, so I applied mosaic to it.

We first confirmed if sea urchin noodles were available.

The walls inside were covered with traces of visits from famous celebrities. The fact that many famous people have visited likely means the taste is guaranteed.

Finally, the sea urchin noodles we ordered arrived. At first, I was a little concerned about the slight foam on the surface of the broth, wondering if it might be fishy. However, this worry turned out to be unfounded.

Neat Side Dishes and Deep Broth Flavor

The side dishes included seasoned seaweed, kimchi, and seasoned broccoli. The side dishes were generally light and had a mild flavor, harmonizing with the main dish, the sea urchin noodles, without overpowering it.

When I started tasting the broth, I noticed a deep, refreshing umami flavor that was distinct from anchovy broth. The broth was not fishy at all and was so clean that I couldn’t stop eating it. The sea urchin noodles, topped with four kinds of garnishes, offered an even richer flavor when eaten with the noodles. Even though I gave about a third of the noodles to my husband, we both finished every last drop of the broth.

Looking at the surrounding tables, I noticed that locals dining alone often ordered the sea urchin rice. For a moment, we regretted not ordering a variety of dishes, but since the sea urchin noodles were so delicious, we weren’t too disappointed.

Stroll at Pyeongdae Beach After the Meal

After finishing our meal, we went down to Pyeongdae Beach to help with digestion. The scenery of the beach covered in basalt rocks was exotic and beautiful. After taking some photos and enjoying a leisurely time, we drove to Dakmori to watch the sunset.

While walking along the beach, I was reminded of my childhood when I stumbled upon an abandoned insect collection box. Memories of collecting such items on the beach as a child and using them as toys resurfaced. I didn’t know its origin—whether it was washed ashore by the waves or discarded by someone—but for a moment, I felt like I had returned to my childhood.

Among Jeju’s local dishes, I enjoyed boramal (turban shell) kalguksu two years ago, and this time I tasted sea urchin noodles. Both dishes were delicious in their own unique ways, and I hope this review will be helpful for those planning a trip to Jeju.
