Deoksugung Palace & Jeongdong-gil
[Odeu House]
Jeongdong-gil I enjoyed lunch with my husband at Odeu House, a restaurant I visited, drawn by the charming over-100-year-old building located opposite Ewha Girls’ High School.
This is a brunch/wine restaurant located in the former Shin-A Ilbo building, a garden terrace brunch & wine bar within the 100-year-old modern cultural heritage site, Shin Memorial Hall. It opens at 11 AM.

The entrance offers a unique European feel, as if entering a cave.

At first, I hesitated, thinking the prices might be high, but my husband looked at the menu and prices and assured me they were similar to other pasta restaurants.

As you go down the stairs, wine and spirits are displayed on the right, offering a colorful visual treat.

The block-style counter is impressive, and the long table extends like a bar.

The interior, decorated with vintage furniture, lighting, and posters collected over many years, harmonizes beautifully with the soul-stirring music.

Initially, I wanted to order the brunch platter (which included Surbock sausage, bacon, hash browns, soft-boiled egg, tomato, French toast, vegetables, and maple syrup) with its variety of ingredients, but it was sold out, so I ordered the fern pasta and ragu pasta.

Focaccia was served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Ragu Pasta (25,000 KRW)
The ragu pasta, made with beef, pork, tomatoes, Reggiano cheese, celery, garlic, and rigatoni, featured rigatoni cooked al dente. The large size of the pasta allowed the ragu sauce to be well absorbed. The moderate acidity of the tomatoes and the generous portion were acceptably good.

Fern Pasta (24,000 KRW)
The fern pasta, made with fern, perilla oil, perilla leaves, garlic, onion, butter, and linguine, boasted an excellent balance that exceeded expectations. The nutty flavor of the perilla sauce combined with the fresh aroma of perilla oil was truly delicious. I could tell they used good ingredients and was impressed by the sophisticated taste. Even though I ordered this pasta because the brunch platter was sold out, I felt it was fortunate.
However, it was disappointing that pickles were not provided. I wished I had ordered a salad.

After finishing a satisfying meal and paying, I looked around the exhibition space behind the kitchen.
[Shin-A Ilbo Jang Ki-bong Memorial Hall]

The memorial hall is set up as a small room.

Shin-A Ilbo was a daily newspaper founded by Jang Ki-bong in 1965 with the principles of freedom, neutrality, and public interest. It was discontinued in 1980 due to the merger of media organizations by the new military regime, and was re-established in 2003.

Jang Ki-bong founded Shin-A Ilbo in 1965 and was the first Korean general newspaper to implement multi-color printing. It ceased publication in 1980 when it was absorbed into Kyunghyang Shinmun due to the media merger. He received the Moran Medal of the Order of Civil Merit and the World Journalist Award for his contributions to the development of journalism. (Excerpted from Namu Wiki)

After your outing to Deoksugung Palace and Jeongdong-gil, if you like Western cuisine, I recommend visiting Odeu House.
